Steps to Choosing The Right BJJ Gi

If you’re just starting out your Jiu Jitsu training, keep in mind that you’ll have to invest some money in buying a Gi in order to do your training properly.

But buying the right Gi for your BJJ training can be a bit complicated. That’s because there are lots of different colors, sizes and styles to choose from. So, here’s how you can buy the right BJJ Gi for your Jiu Jitsu training from the best BJJ Gi brand.

Choose The Right Weave Type

Choosing the right type of weave for your Gi is very important. Here are some of the most commonly bought weave types.

  • Single weave is the most affordable one. It is thin, and is therefore easy to grip for your opponent.
  • When single weave is doubled, double weave is formed. This weave is heavy, and it’s thickness makes it harder to grab. However, it is known to retain heat for a long time.
  • In the middle of the single and double weaves is the Gold weave. It is light, but is almost as durable as double weave.
  • Pearl weave is one of the most commonly used weave in lightweight Gis. This allows for better air flow.
  • Ripstop weave is the most lightweight and the thinnest weaving material. It is really strong, and helps stop tearing in the Gi.

Choosing The Right Size

When it comes to choosing the right size, BJJ Gis range from A0 to A6 for adults, and the F series indicates that the Gi is made for females.

Almost every different Gi brand has its own variation of the typical sizes which you can choose from.

Ideally, you should be able to wear the Gi before buying it. This will help you avoid the inconvenience of returning the Gi after buying it online.
